2021 NHL Draft

Live from the home of the Columbus Blue Jackets at the Nationwide Arena in Columbus, OH.

Round 1 (21st Overall): Cash Emond (RD, Moose Jaw, WHL)

Hard-working, and determined offensive defenseman. Solid prospect all around. Hopefully he'll be a money pick. Hehe. We'll have an opening for him when he's ready. He'll join the team after the 2021-22 season, either with the ECHL's Colorado Eagles or the AHL's San Antonio Rampage.

Very good puck-moving d-man and works hard. You can't teach work ethic. He'll need some time in the AHL when he joins after this upcoming season, but we'll bring him into camp to evaluate and help him plan on the things he can improve upon in the WHL.

Round 3 (81st Overall): Lyle Moore (RW/C, Lethbridge, WHL)

Very, very raw. But amazing physical attributes. Very much a boom or bust draft pick. But we have a lot of solid prospects already. It's worth swinging for the fences in the 3rd round for this player. Looking forward to signing him after the 2021-22 season. He's very raw, so he'll probably start in the ECHL.

Not many junior players score almost 60 goals a season. And it's no fluke - he scored 30 goals the previous year - as a 17 year old. He needs to improve on seeing the ice and his defensive instincts.

Round 4 (111st Overall): Stacy Walz (RW, Calgary, WHL)

Our first three picks are from the same junior league. Solid defensive skills. 2003 birthday means we're not signing him till the middle of 2023.

You need 2-way players in the NHL to succeed. Stacy can be one of those players. He needs to improve the mental part of the game but that can come with experience.

Round 5 (136th Overall): Mike Butt (LW, Sarnia, OHL)

Staying in North America for another pick. Determined and hard worker. Needs to work on his overall game but he has the speed to play up-tempo. And you can't teach speed.

Mike can do a lot of things well. Like Cash he has solid work ethic. He can be molded into something special with some development.

Round 5 (141st Overall): Spencer Bauman (RD, Tri-City Storm, USHL)

Could be something good, could be nothing. Headed to the University of Maine in the summer and he'll spend at least one season there.

Spencer has some great defensive skills for his age. He might not be a star, but you need these physical players to win the battles in the trenches. He's going to a solid college program in Maine, one of the premier programs in Hockey East, and they went to the Frozen Four the last two years - he has experience in pressure situations.

Round 6 (171st Overall): Brant Fitzgerald (C, Massachusetts, HE/NCAA)

Not much offensive upside, but he could be a solid bottom six guy in a few years. He'll spend at least another season in college hockey.

Brant is another player with solid defensive instincts and solid hockey IQ. I would like to see some improvement in offensive production to become a complete 200 ft player, but UMass is another solid program. He's interested in turning pro, but we're undecided right now.

Round 7 (201st Overall): Andre Ekman (C, Timra, Swedish HockeyAllsvenskan)

Kind of like Fitzgerald - a defensive minded center. Could spend more time in Sweden or come over to the ECHL or AHL. Depends on the 50 contract limit after we resign some players.

You can probably figure out the theme by now in the draft. I would prefer to see Andre spend another year in Sweden against players his age before bringing him to North America. .
